What is a tummy tuck?
A Tummy tuck (medically known as abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure offered to patients who are looking to lose stubborn fat pockets and excess skin around their stomach.
The procedure is popular with those wishing to achieve a firmer and flatter stomach after pregnancy or weight loss. The process targets the abdomen where weight can be difficult to shift through conventional dieting and exercise.
Cosmetic surgeons claim that tummy tucks also have medical benefits and can help ease back pain, improve posture, reduce stress urinary incontinence and correct ventral hernias.
What does a tummy tuck involve?
During a tummy tuck, a curved incision is made across the lower part of the stomach, from hip to hip. The cosmetic surgeon then removes the excess skin and fat. The abdominal muscles then need to be realigned and tightened before the skin of the abdominal wall is drawn down to be stitched.
A tummy tuck is usually carried out under general anaesthetic, with a hospital stay of between one and three days.
What can go wrong with a tummy tuck?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications that associated with abdominoplasty. These include:
- wounds failing to heal
- nerve damage
- infection
- a build-up of fluid at the surgical site
- a haematoma
- cramps, numbness or pain in the abdomen
- formation of blood clots
- breathing problems
In addition, patients can be left feeling unhappy with the cosmetic appearance. Common concerns are:
- “dog ears” (surplus skin) at the edges of the scar
- thick, obvious scars
- bulges under the skin
- incorrect placement of the belly button
Making a tummy tuck claim
Surgeons are required to inform their patients of the risks of any surgery. If they fail to do so, or if injury is caused by their failure to carry out the operation to an acceptable standard, then this may result in a tummy tuck claim being made.
