We were at the forefront of the PIP breast implant scandal, with partner Oliver Thorne recovering compensation for hundreds of British women after taking the fight to the French courts. However, concerns have now turned to the risk of women developing Breast-Implant Associated Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL. US pharmaceutical company Allergan Limited along with other breast implant manufacturers are facing compensation claims from women in the UK.
BIA-ALCL is an uncommon cancer of the white blood cells (lymphoma), that grows in response to the body’s reaction to a breast implant. It is treated by removal of the implants with surrounding scar tissue (total capsulectomy) with no additional cancer treatment being required. However, in a small number of cases further treatment such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiotherapy may be required.
The UK regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is closely monitoring the situation. It has issued guidance to those who have a breast implant(s) and are worried about BIA-ALCL, recommending that if anyone is in any doubt to contact their implant surgeon, clinic or hospital where the implant was inserted. Where someone has experienced unexpected changes in size, shape or feel of their breast, they are urged to see their GP for a referral to the local NHS breast unit to be checked.
BIA-ALCL is chiefly associated with breast implants which have a rough, textured, silicone surface. Most cases of BIA-ALCL have occurred years after surgery. The most common sign of an issue is a painless collection of fluid forming around the breast implant and causing the breast to swell. BIA-ALCL may also present as a lump in the breast very close to the implant or even as a build-up of thick scar tissue around the implant.
